Shodan - 1st Dan -
Kihon (from freestyle position with pull back)

- Two techniques each for Jodan, Chudan, Mae Geri, Kekomi, Mawashi Geri, (both sides).
Jiyu Kumite
- Freestyle sparring with two consecutive people.
Kata
- A choice of Kanku Dai, Enpi, Jion, Jitte, Jiin, Gankaku, Hangetsu.
- Plus one Heian Kata of the Examiner’s choice.
Oral Examination
- Examination on Karate-Do, including Japanese terminology.
- As well as performing the grading according to the syllabus, the candidate will be required to have quite an extensive knowledge of both English and Japanese terminology, to enable them to name various blocks, punches, kicks, and strikes.
- The candidate will be expected to explain any move, or combination of moves, from their Tokui Kata in both English and Japanese, plus demonstrate their application.
- Candidates will be asked to give a comprehensive talk on the history of Karate up until the present day, and answer various questions concerning Karate philosophy, ethics, and related topics.
Interview
- Interview to assess the student's character.
Minimum Requirements
- At least 16 years of age.
- Must have trained a minimum of 1 year since being awarded their 1st Kyu.
- A total of 4 years training, minimum.
- Candidates must have completed their portfolio, and must be registered EKF Assistant Instructors.
Nidan - 2nd Dan -
Kihon (from freestyle position with pull back)

Kata
- The student's Tokui Kata.
- Plus one Heian Kata of the Examiner’s choice.

Minimum Requirements
- At least 18 years of age.
- Must have trained a minimum of 3 years since being awarded their Shodan.
- A total of 7 years training, minimum.
- Candidates must have completed their portfolio, and must be registered EKF Instructors.
Sandan - 3rd Dan -
Examination
- Candidates will be asked to perform virtually every Shotokan technique, once slowly, then once fast. Each technique must be applied in every conceivable way.
- An exhaustive explanation of the application and demonstration of the candidate's Tokui Kata will be required. This must be done both in Japanese and English.
- Freestyle against five consecutive opponents required. Must show fighting spirit, as well as good technique, and balanced mental attitude.
Interview
- Interview to assess the student's character.
Minimum Requirements
- Must have trained a minimum of 5 years since being awarded their Nidan.
- Candidates must have completed their portfolio, and must be registered EKF Instructors.
Yondan and above - 4th Dan and above -
Minimum Requirements
- There will be no automatic promotion to Yondan.
- Yondan will only be awarded on merit to the most dedicated of Karate-Ka for services rendered to Karate-Do.
- The candidate must have been training diligently and consistently for a minimum period of 5 years since being awarded their Sandan.
